Attention Seniors: Implement These Tools for an Improved Yoga Routine

Despite having been practiced on the other side of the world for thousands of years, yoga has recently been taking the Western world by storm. What started out as a spiritual practice has now been proven by studies to contribute to a person’s health—so much so, in fact, that some seniors are incorporating this practice into their daily routine along with vitamins and doctor’s visits. If you’ve been practicing for only a few days or many years, there is always room for betterment. Here are some examples of tech tools and other methods that seniors can implement for an improved yoga routine.

Use apps for at-home practice.

Not everyone has the time or energy to attend yoga classes on a regular basis. Luckily, there are many apps you can use for having a yoga session at home. There are hundreds of phone-based apps that offer users instructions on individual poses, guided classes, tips, and more. These apps are also great for setting and hitting weekly or monthly goals. Depending on the age of your current device, you might have to upgrade to a newer phone capable of becoming a yoga hot spot. Look for a phone that has all of the bells and whistles while remaining within your budget and current phone plan.

Wear a fitness watch.

Although yoga is equal parts a spiritual and physical practice, the health benefits of this technique cannot be overstated. Seniors especially benefit from this habit by improving their flexibility, balance, and strength. As with any form of growth, keeping track of some important indicators can give you an idea of where you’re at, the progress you’ve made, and some necessary changes. Wearing a fitness watch is an easy and affordable way to keep track of some physical indicators such as heart rate and calorie expenditure that can tell you a lot about your yoga practice.

Listen to meditation music or guided meditation.

In addition to offering several physical benefits, yoga can help improve a practitioner’s mental well-being. If you zone out when holding your poses or transitioning through a routine that has become second nature,  you could be missing out on some of the cognitive benefits of this practice. Instead of allowing your mind to wander, listen to some meditation music or a guided meditation while you’re doing yoga. These tools will help you to remain concentrated and mindful during your entire routine. There are plenty of apps, websites, and podcasts that offer some form of meditation advice.

Use technologically advanced yoga mats.

In the 21st century, yoga mats are no longer limited in use. What used to be a floor mat designed to catch sweat and limit slip is now being transformed into a full-blown yoga assistant. There are a few high-tech models currently on the market with the ability to teach you yoga poses. The sensors built into the yoga mat are connected to your device of choice. With this helpful feedback, it’s easier to leave your comfort zone and take risks with more advanced yoga poses. The advanced mats will let you know which way to shift in order to maintain balance.

Yoga is a tremendously beneficial practice that can help seniors feel, look, and stay younger both physically and mentally. Although this technique can be intimidating at times, seniors can implement some of the aforementioned tools for an improved yoga routine and a healthier life overall.
