Today's seniors are the first generation to regularly use advanced technology daily. Below are the top 10 devices that all older adults should consider, as recommended by our Delmanor LivingWell Managers, Kristina Lopez Papic and Tiffany Moraes.
Tablets, Computers, and Laptops
These devices have revolutionized daily activities. For seniors, portable tablets with apps are especially crucial for communication and cognitive engagement. "Some popular apps among our residents are Mind Games and Left vs. Right," says Lopez. "They are excellent for mental stimulation and help keep the mind active daily." Newspaper apps are also a favourite, adds Moraes. "Tablets also allow older adults to stay connected via email, Skype, Facebook, YouTube, and more."
Smartphones
Smartphones are essential for staying connected on the go. Seniors use them "to keep in touch with friends and family and for emergencies," says Lopez. One of her residents' favorite apps is Uber.
Smartwatches
Devices like Apple Watches and Fitbits are multifunctional but are primarily used by seniors as fitness trackers. "They enjoy tracking their steps. Smartwatches provide more accurate step counts than pedometers and show distance, calories burned, and more," explains Moraes. "They are also user-friendly."
Foldable Keyboards
Many seniors find the keyboards on phones and tablets too small. "Foldable keyboards are highly portable and connect via Bluetooth, eliminating the need to use touchscreens," says Lopez.
E-Books
For those who can't visit bookstores or libraries, e-books offer great benefits. "You can order books from home," says Moraes. "Plus, you can adjust the font size for larger print if needed."
Airtags
These small tracking devices can attach to nearly any item and use Bluetooth to connect to your mobile device, making it easy to locate lost items. "Perfect for anyone who frequently misplaces keys, phones, wallets, and more," Lopez notes.
Assistive Technology
There are excellent products available to aid with hearing or sight, such as devices that enlarge desktop screens or special phones for hearing impairments, says Moraes. "There are also Bluetooth devices that connect wirelessly to the TV for those hard of hearing, so they don't need to turn up the volume."
Light Therapy
These light boxes help combat seasonal affective disorder by mimicking sunlight. "They are beneficial for those who experience mood issues due to lack of sunlight," explains Lopez. They are portable, affordable, and space-efficient.
Sound Sleep Machines
These machines play soothing sounds and block out background noise to aid sleep. "Ideal for those with short sleep cycles or insomnia," says Lopez.
Medical Alert Systems
These systems are crucial for seniors who may need emergency medical assistance, especially in cases of falls or medical emergencies.
