Is There a "Right" Time to Move to Assisted Living?

It is not always easy to tell when the time is right to move to assisted living. Coming up with an answer can be very challenging, but it’s important to understand that if you plan early enough and transition your loved one when they start needing help, they will have a better quality of life and may be able to avoid requiring a higher level of care, which may happen if you wait too long.

There are many signs that will indicate that it's time to consider a move, for example:  increasing health concerns, unexplained signs of physical injury, changes in habits or personality, significant forgetfulness, and difficulty functioning cognitively or physically (like difficulty managing medications, bathing or grooming or preparing healthy meals).

Depending on the severity and progression of what you are observing, and concerns related to safety, you will need to determine if what you are seeing are “red flags” as they may indicate that the person should not be living alone. It's also important to note that you don't have to wait until a senior’s situation becomes one of concern, to begin your research into assisted living since preparation is key! Making a move before an emergency situation occurs will ensure you find a suite in your preferred community.

Making this move before an emergency occurs, will also provide the senior with a number of other benefits, including a safe environment equipped with special features and amenities like fire prevention programs, emergency call systems, handrails, accessible bathrooms, grab bars and good lighting. Socialization is another benefit and will positively impact their mental health and well-being. Assisted living will allow residents to participate in group activities throughout the day. Different events, workshops, fitness classes, and even volunteer projects, are just some of the opportunities available in many residences, which will prevent feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Transportation is another service that is offered in most settings. Residents are able to go on planned community outings, which may include plays, museums, parks, malls, and restaurants. Some residences also offer seniors an opportunity to schedule transportation to and from appointments, which is a wonderful option, especially for seniors who no longer drive. Residents are able to enjoy a variety of dining options with easy access to nutritious meals, allowing them to maintain a healthy diet. Lastly, assisted living communities can help seniors manage their medication (as care providers are available to take over this responsibility), assist with ordering refills, and administering the correct dosage at a consistent time of day. All of the benefits of assisted living help to provide residents and their family members with peace of mind.  Many residents find themselves wondering why they did not consider moving to assisted living sooner.
